Few individuals embody the spirit of active citizenship and service to the Earth as completely as Sally Ranney.

For more than four decades, Sally has dedicated her life to protecting wildlife, preserving biodiversity, advancing climate solutions, and fostering a more sustainable future for humanity. Her journey began in the mountains of Colorado, where living on a working cattle ranch gave her a firsthand understanding of the delicate relationship between land, water, wildlife, and human livelihoods. There she discovered that sustainability was not an abstract concept, but a practical necessity for the flourishing of both people and nature.

A proposed clear-cut timber sale in her local watershed became a defining turning point. Rather than remain a bystander, Sally chose to become informed, engaged, and active in protecting the landscape she loved. That experience awakened a lifelong commitment to environmental stewardship and shaped a guiding principle that has informed her work ever since: meaningful change begins when citizens choose to participate in creating the future they wish to see.

From those beginnings emerged an extraordinary career spanning conservation, renewable energy, climate leadership, sustainable development, and systems change. After joining The Wilderness Society as a Resource Policy Analyst, Sally went on to co-found American Wildlands, serving as its President for two decades. Under her leadership, the organization pioneered Corridors of Life, one of the most ambitious wildlife connectivity and conservation mapping initiatives of its time, helping advance a new vision for landscape-scale biodiversity protection across North America.

Recognizing the growing urgency of climate change, Sally later co-founded the American Renewable Energy Institute (AREI) and the internationally recognized AREDAY Summit, bringing together leaders from business, government, science, and civil society to accelerate the transition toward a renewable energy future. Through these initiatives, she has helped foster dialogue, innovation, and practical solutions to some of humanity's most pressing environmental challenges.

Her vision has always extended beyond national boundaries. As co-founder and President of Global Choices, she has championed international cooperation on climate action, Arctic preservation, and planetary stewardship, helping to raise awareness of the interconnected challenges facing humanity and the Earth. Through Global Choices, she has brought together thought leaders, scientists, policymakers, and changemakers in pursuit of a shared vision for a thriving future.

Throughout her career, Sally has also provided leadership and service to numerous organizations dedicated to conservation and human wellbeing, including the National Wildlife Federation, the Bonobo Conservation Initiative, the Aspen Brain Institute, the Climate Accountability Institute, and the One Humanity Institute. She has worked with U.S. Presidents, advised major initiatives in conservation and sustainability, and helped shape policies and strategies that continue to influence environmental leadership today.

What distinguishes Sally's contribution is not only the breadth of her accomplishments, but the depth of her commitment. Whether protecting wildlife corridors, advancing renewable energy, preserving ecosystems, or building bridges between diverse sectors of society, she has consistently championed the understanding that humanity's future is inseparable from the health and vitality of the living Earth.

Her life's work reflects a rare combination of visionary leadership, practical action, courage, and compassion. Through the organizations she has built, the movements she has strengthened, and the countless individuals she has inspired, Sally Ranney has made an extraordinary contribution to the wellbeing of both humanity and the planet.

The Visioneers International Network is honoured to recognize Sally Ranney as a Hero of Humanity for her lifelong dedication to biodiversity preservation, climate solutions, environmental stewardship, and the creation of a more sustainable, regenerative, and flourishing future for all.
